Since i currently have no way of making anything with flash due to the fact that i have no flash software (i would like to get it eventually) i will use my news posts to discuss my thoughts of the things that need to be thought about rather than my awesome new flash submissions like most people would.
Runescape. a game that many consider to be lame, noobish, and just plain crappy. but as many people hate it, there are plenty that like it. i believe it's been given a bad name by those who like it a little too much and spend weeks on end on it and obsess about it and those who havnt played since the original Runescape (which was total crap) and havnt even been on the site since. most of those people who are against it play other MMORPGs just as much as the obsessed people that waste weeks on end on runescape. and its in human nature to think as others do, so ideas spread, and a good thing got a bad name.
Now at this point im sure you have figured out that i like Runescape. but don't judge me. not yet. ive played it for years. no, not literally years without breaks, i did have to take a few hours off to sleep every few days. but sereously, im one of the few who has stuck with Runescape since Classic. i didnt used to like it all that much, but over the years the rate of improvement has been increadible. i played for free for years, and i admit, the free game isnt that great. but after my friend convinced me that membership is awesome, i decided to try it. after all, its only $5 a month, what did i have to lose other than maybe the cup of coffee i could have bought instead?
And it was definitely worth it. it was actually pretty entertaining. there is so much more to it than just killing things like most MMORPGs. it has a very artistic feel to it, and it has a sense of humor in its hundreds of different small bits of story lines. take for example WoW, possibly the most popular MMORPG there is. its based mostly on combat, its pretty realistic, has good graphics, and in the end, everyone loves it. but its really expensive and is rarely updated. and there it is. the thing i like most about Runescape, it's updated all the time. each month features a huge update along with lots of smaller ones, and the smaller ones are usually graphical improvements. slowly the graphics are getting better and better. and possibly one of the most impressive things about Runescape is the way they get the ideas for the updates. the players choose them. the players tell them what they want, and thats what they get. how many MMORPGs actually do that?
and in the end, the people who seem to hate Runescape the most really don't. either they dont really know anythng about it and only know what they have been told, or are mistaken in their own veiws of things through the perceptions of others. of course there are still going to be plenty of people who hate it for the simple reason that it just isn't appealing to them. but ive found plenty of examples of people who only THINK they hate it. at my school i was playing Runescape once and some other students came up to me and told me how crappy Runescape was and how i was a nerd for playing it. if you ever saw me "nerd" wouldn't be the first word you would think of. im about 6' tall and im a dirtbiker, not exactly a classic nerd. but when i asked them why it's crap, they couldn't answer. i knew they weren't expecting that question, but i did expect them to have some reason. they didn't. out of the three of them only one had ever actually played it, and that was 4 years ago, or in better terms, hundreds of updates ago.
many people are put off by the fact that it will never be complete, some just don't like it because its not something they are interested in, but the rest are simply victims of group psychology, swayed by the ideas of others. all im saying is try it, and think about what makes a game good other than graphics. it's one of the few games left with original ideas rather than different versions of the same old MMORPG elements. and above all, its one of the last games the values humor over blood. chatting with other people is as much of a part of any MMORPG as the game itself. and i find that those who are the most artistic are usually on Runescape rather than any other games.
so think about it, what matters more? graphics or story? blood or originality?
